Chapter twenty-seven

I crossed the cutlery on the plate and flashed a gentle smile at Mrs. Bellucci, who was watching me very carefully.

“Thank you; the food was delicious.”

"Want some more or juice?"

“I'm satisfied, thank you very much.”

“Make yourself comfortable. Eat more.”

“I’m fine.”

She shifted in the chair beside me and watched me a little more closely. This caused me to shrink back in my chair immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

“It's all right.“ I tried to compose myself.

"If you'll forgive my intrusion, how did you and my son meet?"

I thought for a while, didn't know what to answer right away, but I figured the truth would be convenient. Mateo had just told me not to tell his family I was pregnant. From his older brother's reaction, it was also unwise for them to know about the sex. Apart from omitting these details, I figured the rest could be said.

“On my engagement. He showed up to talk to my father.”

“A Gypsy leader, I assume.”

“Yes.”

"You were getting married today?"

“Yes.”

“Did you want to get married?”

I shook my head in the negative This was an indisputable truth. As kind and considerate as Ramón tried to be with me, I didn't want that marriage.

“I'm going to marry Mateo.”

“And is that what you want?”

“Yes.”

“My children have the uncanny ability to bring brides home and scare me to death.” She flashed a yellow smile. “Even Marco, everything was planned for a long time, and things didn’t go as expected, but I want you to be welcomed in our house.”

“Thank you, Miss Bellucci.”

“You're welcome, but honey, call me Rosi, please. I'm glad to be the first to welcome you here without scaring you to death.”

“Who says I'm not scared to death?”

We both laughed together.

“You two seem to have chosen each other, and that's a great start.”

Her speech left me thoughtful. A few minutes later, I realized she was right. I went after Mateo the first time, whether it was my curiosity or not, and if I hadn't done that, I might not have been sitting at that table talking to Rosimeire.

“Don't be shy about asking me for whatever you need. I'll introduce the house, but you'll get to know how it all works over time.”

“Thanks. What will my chores be?”

“Your chores?”

“Yes, in my house, I took turns with the other women washing dishes, picking up the garbage, cleaning the rooms...”

“Don't worry about that. Here we have employees.”

“But what do you do during the day?”

“Do you like to read?”

“Yes.”

“Then come with me. I will introduce you to my library.”

Rosimeire gestured for me to follow. At first, I was uncomfortable leaving the dirty plate on the table, but I tried not to think about it too much. I knew their culture was different from mine.

Marrying Mateo Bellucci would open up another world for me, and I was looking forward to it.
